The Poker Pit: What Is Actually Running
Our Poker Pit operates Thursday to Saturday. Doors open from 7pm and the poker tables stay open into the late evening, depending on demand. You will find us at 21 Binara Street in Canberra’s CBD, the only licensed table-gaming venue in the ACT. There are no poker machines on our floor - the focus is entirely on live table games, with poker right in the middle of it.
The room is intentionally compact. Seats are limited and on busy Fridays or Saturdays, the waiting list fills much quicker than new players usually expect. Turning up at 7pm on the dot and assuming an instant seat is its own kind of gamble. In industry practice, pre-registration is the safer move, and we strongly recommend it. A quick check-in with us about the current schedule before you travel usually saves time and hassle.
Cash Games: Format, Buy-Ins and Rake Structure
Our live cash game offering is No-Limit Texas Hold’em with $2/$3 blinds. The minimum buy-in is $100 and the maximum is $500. These are player-versus-player tables, dealt by professional dealers, with a rake taken from eligible pots. According to recent player discussions, the rake is 10% with a capped amount - generally reported as around $15 per hand. Rake structures can change over time, so the current numbers should always be checked at casinocanberra.com.au/poker-pit/ before you sit down.
| Format | Stakes | Buy-In Range | Rake Model |
|---|---|---|---|
| No-Limit Texas Hold’em | $2/$3 | $100 - $500 | 10% (capped) |
| Canberra Poker (house game) | Fixed table game | Set by house | House edge applies |
One procedural detail catches some visitors by surprise: buy-ins at our poker tables are taken at the table, not through a central cashier cage. When your name is called, you sit down and exchange your cash for chips directly with the dealer handling that table. It is simple once you see it, though it may feel different if you have mainly played in other Australian casino poker rooms with a more traditional cage-first model.
On a standard night, expecting two poker tables to be running side by side is reasonable. Walk in close to 7pm on a Saturday without any prior registration and you may spend longer on the waiting list than you hoped, or in some cases miss out entirely if all lists are already full.
Thursday Hold’Em Tournament
Our primary scheduled poker event is the Thursday Hold’Em Tournament. Cards are in the air at 7pm, the entry fee is $180, and a minimum of 10 registered players is required for the tournament to start. If that minimum is not met, the event does not proceed, so checking how many names are down before you drive in is simple risk management.
We publish structured dates for set periods, for example a run of weekly events from March through May 2026. Outside those windows, you should confirm availability directly with us. The official event page at casinocanberra.com.au/event/thursday-poker-holdem-tournament/ always carries the latest dates and status.
A practical way to join a Thursday tournament looks like this:
- First check the current schedule on the official event page.
- Make sure the tournament is confirmed for that date - the 10 player minimum still applies.
- Get to 21 Binara Street ahead of the 7pm start time to allow for registration.
- At the main entrance, present current photo ID. Entry is strictly 18+ only, and without ID access is not permitted.
- Go to the Poker Pit registration area and add your name for the event.
- Pay the $180 tournament entry when directed by our team.
- Take your seat card and initial chip stack allocation before the first hand starts.
- Once play begins, follow the dealer announcements for blind levels, breaks and all tournament rules.
We set the Thursday tournament up as approachable for various experience levels, which means you will usually see regulars and newer players sharing the same tables. That mix of styles and comfort levels is a big reason Thursday poker has its own feel.
